Take the overnight ferry from Koh Samui (30 min) or stay overnight on Koh Phangan. Make sure you book accommodation months in advance if you plan to stay overnight. The return ferry departs at 7:00 the following day.

Ko Tao —the “Turtle Island”— a 1 hour and 30 minute ferry ride from Koh Samui (with a stopover in Koh Phangan) is the most active diving center in the Gulf of Thailand and one of the most important in Asia: the highest concentration of dive centers per square kilometer in the world, the lowest prices on the planet for the PADI Open Water course and a coral reef with the second highest density of sea turtles in the Gulf.
The PADI Open Water Diver course in Ko Tao costs between 9.000 and 13.000 baht (US$250–350) depending on the operator. Between October and December, whale sharks migrate through the Gulf of Thailand and pass by Ko Tao. Dive operators' Whale Shark Alerts, when one is near the reef, give a maximum of two hours' notice. The whale shark does not attack, measures 9 to 12 meters in length, and swimming alongside one is one of the most incredible experiences diving has to offer.
